The Role of the Intervenor
DeafBlind Ontario Services hires Intervenors on a permanent full-time, part-time and casual basis to support its residences across Ontario. Intervenors are specially trained to act as the ‘eyes’ and ‘ears’ of the resident. Intervenors provide information about the environment and what is happening, assists the individual who is deafblind to communicate, form accurate concepts, make appropriate decisions, and anticipate coming events, assists with life skills and most importantly, assists the individual to achieve as much independence as possible.
Staff Development
Beyond training mandated by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, DeafBlind Ontario Services has developed the TOUCH training program, which provides Intervenors with ongoing training, educational opportunities and professional development. This unique comprehensive program has been specifically designed to meet the unique needs of each individual resident – and the Intervenor.
In addition to the TOUCH program, Intervenors must complete DeafBlind Ontario Services’ Total Communication Curriculum (TCC) – a mandatory training that fosters more meaningful sharing of information between Intervenor, resident and staff.
DeafBlind Ontario Services encourages all Intervenors to become members of the Intervenor Organization of Ontario (IOO), which provides a professional code of ethics that include the ongoing pursuit of knowledge and skill in all areas of Intervention.
